Pipes aren’t the easiest of instruments to work with in an orchestra. “I had to do a little bit of arranging and put pipe embellishments on the orchestral score. So I got another three guys from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers to come down with me. He said: “There are four pipers at certain points in the film, and Patrick wanted four rather than just one multi-tracking. But there’s a lot more than that.”Īs lead piper on the soundtrack – which also includes Scottish folk singer Julie Fowlis and Mumford & Sons featuring teen vocalist Birdy – Lorne helped Patrick find other pipers to bolster the soundtrack’s skirl.īut the 28-year-old was then told he and his fellow musicians were TOO GOOD for the movie. “I didn’t know until I got a copy of the scores through, it could have been just a few bars. But, as it turns out, there are a lot of pipes in the film, and they’ve been used really well. “I had actually read somewhere that Patrick wasn’t keen on the idea of using pipes in the soundtrack at first. “He told me he’d mentioned me to Patrick, so last November I sat looking nervously at my phone for days after Stuart told me he had given Patrick my number, until the call came. So he passed my details over to Patrick, probably not knowing how big a deal he was passing up. “But Stuart was in New York for the winter and couldn’t do it. “When Brave came along, Patrick wanted Stuart to play the pipes for the movie. “He had worked with Patrick (the Glasgow-born composer whose movie scores include Thor, Donnie Brasco and Gosford Park) on Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire in the past after Patrick spotted him playing at a concert. I’ve played with them a lot in the past, both live and recording. The piper, from Carradale, Argyll, said: “My ex-flatmate is Stuart Cassells, of the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Lorne teamed up with top Hollywood composer Patrick Doyle on the score of the Scottish fantasy flick. LORNE MACDOUGALL’S music is about to be heard by millions after he won the part as lead bagpiper on the Disney-Pixar movie Brave – but he only got his big break because his friend was too busy to take on the work.
